So if you are just going to run one sprinkler on one hose and move the hose around the yard, it’s better to buy a jet pump rather than a sprinkler pump. Because the jet pump will give plenty of pressure and a smaller flow rate that will not hurt the pump.

When choosing a sprinkler pump, consider these following things to get the perfect one that fits your needs:

What size sprinkler pump do you need?

Anytime you are replacing a sprinkler pump or buying a new one, it is best to choose the right size. There are a lot of 2hp pumps in use where a 1/2hp pump is better suited for the job. This can be a complicated business but that is why we are here to help.

To determine the correct sprinkler pump size just look at the number of sprinkler heads you are using. They should tell you how much water and pressure that are required to make the pattern you are looking for.

All sprinkler heads are rated at a specific GPM (gallons per minute), and PSI (pounds per square inch). To know it, just use the manufacturer’s chart.

At different pressures, the sprinkler head and nozzle will consume different amounts of water. For example, at 40 pounds per square inch (PSI) the sprinkler head will use 3.8 gallons per minute (GPM). If your sprinkler pump is rated at 12 GPM (or 720 gallons per hour), it’s the best option for an irrigation system with 3 sprinkler heads.

Assuming you’re using the same exact sprinkler heads, the PSI will stay the same throughout your irrigation system. That means if each head is rated at 40 PSI, and your irrigation has 3 sprinkler heads, you will need a sprinkler pump that rated at 12 GPM (or 720 GPH) and 40 PSI. If your pump is above 40 PSI, you may need a pressure regulator for your system which will typically bring the pressure down to 40. If the pressure is much higher than that, it can weaken your pump and water pipes over time.

How high are you pumping?

Sprinkler pumps have suction lift configurations. A suction lift configuration is a vertical distance that the pump can be above the water source (and be able to draw water). Typically, atmospheric pressure limits vertical suction lift of pumps to 25 feet from water surface. This does not mean that you are limited to 25 feet of pipe, you could use upwards of 200 feet of suction pipe, so long as the liquid source is not lower than 25 feet below the pump center line.

A suction lift configuration is a very important factor to consider when choosing a sprinkler pump especially if you live on a hill and you want to pull water up from the base of the hill. To find out the suction lift configuration of a sprinkler pump, read the pump’s specification. The best sprinkler pumps should provide lift between 20 to 25 feet.

Is the pump self-priming?

A self-priming pump works by using the laws of buoyancy and compression to clear air out of a pumping system automatically, so you don’t have to do it yourself. But it doesn’t mean that they should start up dry! Self-priming pumps need fluid in the casing to get started. Running dry, even for a short while, will cause damage to the mechanical seal, and pump failure.

The best sprinkler pumps should be self-priming. Why? Because if you use a self-priming pump, you’ll never need to re-prime the pump as long as a check or foot valve is installed on the suction pipe. This will save you lots of time and headache.

Where should you place your sprinkler pump?

As mentioned above, a sprinkler pump is defined to have a suction lift of 25 feet or less. That means it cannot be located more than 25 feet above the water source being pumped. If you have to locate your pump more than 25 feet above the water source, consider a different type of pump.

It’s much easier for a pump to push water out than it is for it to pull water upward, so it’s best to install your sprinkler pump as close to the water source as possible without risking water-damage to the pump. Also, install the pump in a clean, dry, and ventilated location that provides adequate drainage, room for servicing, and protection from freezing temperatures. Bolt down the pump evenly on a good foundation, preferably concrete, to prevent the development of unnecessary stress.

This sewage pump is suitable for pumping sewage, effluent, wastewater, groundwater and other non-explosive, non-corrosive liquids with up to 2 inches solids. It includes a wide-angle float switch that turns the pump on and off as the fluid level rises and falls.

Like 2 options above, the WAYNE RPP50 is an automatic sewage pump. It is provided with a “Switch Genius” capacitive water sensor. When water is detected, the pump will start automatically. Wayne claims that their Switch Genius is a new electronic switch technology that lasts up to 5 times longer than conventional switches. Our experts tested it, and it wasn’t as good as we expected. It seems like the Switch Genius isn’t smart enough to tell when the pit is empty. If you buy it, you’d want to remove the Genius Switch and replace it with a float switch.

The WAYNE RPP50 sewage pump has a much smaller size than average ½ HP pumps, and it weighs only 23.6 pounds – is exactly half the Zoeller M267. This sewage pump is small but has plenty of power to do the job.
